We’re honored to officially welcome Community Forge as a land partner at Freedom Village.
Community Forge is a BIPOC-led organization doing vital work to build resilience, safety, and sovereignty for marginalized communities — and from the beginning, it was clear that our missions were aligned.
In a world where access to land is still largely denied to Black and Indigenous people, this partnership is a step toward repair.
🤝 What This Partnership Means
Community Forge will steward its own 5-acre zone within the Freedom Village site.
They will have full control and autonomy over how their area is used, developed, and governed.
We offered this space at the most cost-effective and accessible rate possible, not as charity — but as commitment. Land access is power, and this is one way we redistribute it in practice.
🌿 Why This Matters
Many of us talk about “land back” and reparative justice — but very few startups, especially in early stages, are willing to act on it. We are.
This partnership is about:
Decentralizing control.
Ensuring real self-determination.
Honoring the history of land theft and exclusion that continues to harm BIPOC communities.
Starting from a place of equity, not extraction.
This isn’t a favor — it’s a framework. It’s a way of doing things differently from the ground up.
🛠️ Shared Infrastructure, Separate Autonomy
Community Forge will participate in shared infrastructure planning (roads, utilities, safety), but their land is theirs to design and direct. Whether that includes healing spaces, mutual aid housing, food sovereignty, or cultural preservation — that’s up to them.
Our goal was simple: no red tape, no micromanagement, and no conditions that mimic white institutional control.
We trust them to lead — because this is what solidarity looks like.
If you're a BIPOC-led group interested in joining future locations of our sanctuary network, we’re actively exploring ways to expand this model. It won’t fix everything, but it starts to unbuild the systems we no longer consent to.
In power,
The Freedom Village & Unity Harbour Team
This is absolutely wonderful truly Carmen
